The Underground Railroad

Slaves who were traveling on the Underground Railroad sang a coded song called "Follow the Drinking Gourd".  The drinking gourd was the  Big Dipper, which is part of a constellation called Ursa Major or the Great Bear.  The front of the bowl  points to Polaris  or the North Star, which the slaves followed  to the North = Freedom.
