Description

The blue jay's back, wings and tail are all dark blue.

It has black feathers on its wings and tail.

There is a black necklace around its white face and throat.

Its belly is white. What a pretty bird!

It has black eyes, bill and feet. The blue jay in the picture has it's head crest down.

The blue jay is about 10 inches long from tip of its bill to the tip of its tail.

Blue Jays are warm-blooded vertebrates, which means they have a backbone.

They breathe with lungs.

Diet

A blue jay is an omnivore. That means it eats both animals and vegetables.

The Blue jay eats mostly nuts and seeds.

Sometimes it eats insects and fruit.

Babies

The female lays 4 - 7 pale olive, or bluish-green eggs, with brown spots.

The nest is made of out of sticks and leaves and is shaped like a cup.

She sits on the eggs for 16 - 18 days.

Her mate feeds her while she is hatching the eggs.

Habitat

Blue Jays live in woods, forests and in neighbourhoods with lots of trees.

Predators

Their enemies are hawks, falcons and owls.

Interesting Facts

Let's have a party! A group of Blue Jays is called "A party of jays"!

In the fall, Blue Jays bury acorns in the ground, just like squirrels!

Blue Jays are very smart and can copycat the call of a hawk!

The Blue Jay belongs to the crow family.
